This complete working historic estate is home to the Earls of Litchfield. On show are extensive servants' quarters with kitchens, laundry, Servants' Hall, brewhouse and coach house. The elegant Mansion House built in 1693 contains artefacts from Admiral Anson's circumnavigation of the world and fine collection of china, silver and furniture. An idyllic model farm (1805) lies in the parkland, with working watermill, kitchens and diary. Rare breeds of livestock roam the grounds and eight monuments adorn the wider landscape. Costumed 'first person' guides work in the historic environments producing flour, bread, ale, butter and cheese. The walled garden (1805) once a centre of horticultural excellence and famed in the 19th century for growing melons, pineapples, lemons and vines. |
