Snowshill Manor was owned by the Abbey of Winchcombe, until the dissolution of the monasteries in 1539. Since then its has had many owners and tenants. The mainpart of the house dates from 1500, but there have been many alterations over the years. By 1919 the manor was semi-derelict farm, when it was bought by Charles Paget Wade as an ideal place to display his planned collection of craftmanship. Wade gave the manor and its contents to the National Trust in 1951, with the desire that it would inspire people to love good craftmanship. Charles Wade inherited a sugar plantation in the West Indies and this enabled him to devote his life to amassing an eclectic collection of over 22,000 items, including musical instruments, clocks,toys,bicycles,weavers's and spinners' tools and Japanese armour. He had str0ng views on how the collection should be presented and did not want to label individual items or even the plants in the garden. Respectful of this wish, neither does the National Trust. Since acquiring the property the Trust has concentrated on conserving it rather than restoring it to a pristine state. Fascinating features within the garden include an orangery, ice house, pavillions and working mushroom house. Sunday 14 October 2007: Early 18th-century country house, garden and park. An exhibition in the barn tells the story of the Kings dramatic escape from Cromwell's troops. The house underwent various alterations in the 19th century. The garden, recreated in 17th - century style with a formal knot garden, arbour and nut walk, has appropiate varieties of herbs and plants. There are a good collections of furniture and paintings, as well as a nursery. The attractive walled garden contains historic collection of apple tree. Now two-thirds underway, a fifteen year restoration project has seen the gardens slowly return to their former glory. Stowe House (not NT) is home to Stowe School which is in the grounds. There is a delightful garden with stewponds, a lake walk and nature walk. It is a country house created out of a medieval abbey , the home of a pioneer of photography. The Abbey was built in 1232 and converted into a house in 1540. Quite a lot of the old building survives. It was bequeathed to the National Trust in 1944.
